Sorry Pete, I know "we" do not "support" Assad.
My argument is that with our attempt to defeat enemies of Assad we ARE supporting him. The fact that we say any political solution must include Assad's relinquishing power is sort of an empty statement since there is no political solution on the table.
Assad is not losing in this conflict. If we annihilate ISIS, and we have almost, Assad is still there. With support from Russia and Turkey Assad will overrun the SDF and Kurds.
Trump is getting us out of another impossible situation.
I hope you and Ed are wrong. Maybe there is someone out there who can fill the job that General Mattis gave up on.
