Morgana

Morgana smiled at the image he conjured, allowed herself a giggle. It felt good. She couldn't remember the last time she'd laughed without it being some kind of performance. Her brother watched her at meal time, at meetings, for the smallest change in expression. Each one, she was sure, was logged against her. One wrong move, capable of rousing his suspicions, could be the end of everything. Even for her, whose blood was so close to his, she doubted there'd be any mercy. She had escape plans, and contingencies, and contingencies built into her contingencies, but part of her was sure he'd be aware of them all.

No, she scolded herself, reeling her mind back in. Don't think of that now, just enjoy the moment.

Enjoy him. His kiss was everything. And she didn't want to leave. She yearned to stay where they were, hidden away from the world in their cabin, just the two of them. And, just for a little while, she'd be able to remember what normal felt like.

Something shifted in him. His body tenses. Morgana opened her eyes and leaned back, away from his chest so she might study his face. He'd decided something. It was there in his look, in the set of his mouth.

"Mace...?" she wondered, half-expecting him to say it was time for them to go, to step out of their make-shift sanctuary and back into the world. It was too soon, much too soon. She felt safe with him. She'd never thought she needed that from a person until everything had been turned so irreversibly on its head.

He kissed her again, warmly, tenderly, like something precious. By the time he looked at her again, she was smiling. What on earth had come over him. "What is it?" she laughed gently, marvelling at the sudden change in him.

And then he said it.

But he hardly gave her chance to process it. The question rolled into a string of promises, of hopes, wishes and dreams. Her heart swelled, making its presence felt behind the confines of her corset. She half-wanted to ask him to say it again. She hadn't known she'd wanted it, until the words had tripped so beautifully of his tongue.

Her fingers trembled as she wrapped them in the fabric of his shirt, and pulled him in again. She rocked up on her toes to kiss him. She felt suddenly like she could do anything. It was stupid, it was irrational, it was dangerous, but could she really be blamed for wanting something beautiful for herself in the face of so much uncertainty and misery.

"Marry me now," she breathed. She kissed him again, suddenly reckless. "Tonight."

She rocked back to smile at him.

"We'll go to earth, to this place you love so much, find our witnesses and be home by morning."

Morgana took hold of his hands again.

"Let's have one beautiful night, Mace," she implored him, "and then I can go back to the castle and think about all those tomorrows knowing I'm your wife."

She reached up to land a gentle kiss on the corner of his mouth.

"I think I could do anything if I knew that."
