For a moment, as she stands there contemplating her situation, Evren’s thoughts do the unthinkable: like a train hurtling off the tracks, they turn toward him. Her reaction is instant and visceral, a surge of hurt and anger and disgust in her gut. Her expression becomes firm and resolute.
Just as she is about to suck it up and go, Persephone surprises her yet again. Evren’s tired eyes turn toward her, and a little spark of life returns to them, matched by an appreciative smile spreading across her face. More feelings - ones she does not quite understand yet, but ones that are nonetheless not unpleasant - flutter in her belly. Persephone’s gesture has flipped a switch in Evren.
Evren hesitates, but she cannot think of a reason to turn Persephone down. Nor does she want to.
“If you’re sure,” she finally says, and takes a step forward to stand beside Persephone. A freezing gust whistles through the trees, tugs at her hair, and stings her eyes, but she hardly notices it. “To be honest, I could really use the company. Thank you.”
Evren smiles and takes a moment to study Persephone’s face up close, then abruptly strides forward back in the direction she had arrived. From over her shoulder she says, “But only if you tell me all about yourself. I think it’s a crime we don’t know each other any better, and heaven knows I could use the distraction.”
