Mike,
You may be correct that Nimitz would have done better than MacArthur but I believe that is a hard case to prove. For all his vanity, MacArthur was a man of great experience in the West Pacific countries and his record in Japan is often cited as the best outcome of any occupation we have ever done. The country was restored to reasonable status in the Western world without conflict and minimum cost to U S. Nothing like Iraq
