He could care less how she felt about the situation or the child/ren she now carried, as long as she did them no harm. He was ever vigilant, barely leaving the borders even to kidnap wolves in the brink of her pregnancy. He didn't even see Belhara during this time and for once, he didn't mind, if only cause he was thinking of the father he was going to be become. His own parents weren't nurturer's by any means. They were wanderers, vagabonds, nomads. They gave him and his brother birth, taught them the means to survive, then moved on, as if their job was done. Cuirass learned early to take what he needed from others, not to wait for them to give it freely. His own children would be strong but he promised to give them more attention than his own ever gave him or Kronos.
He was near the den when he heard Inara cry out and instantly he was at her side. His eyes didn't glow with affection as other males watching their females give birth. No, he was only vigilant and concerned of his own children's safety during this. "Is it time?" He whispered, searching her gaze for an honest answer. He wouldn't put it past her to lie and say it was then wait for him to lower his guard and take off for the borders. She'd already tried to run once. He wouldn't let it happen again, not so close to having what he always wanted. He didn't try to touch her, his gaze possessively watching her stomach. He'd never seen this done before so he didn't really know what to expect. Would they just slide out into the world? Would he have to say a magic word?
It would be too much to ask for them to be like little aliens and simply eat their way out of her, killing her as they go. No, he didn't wish for Inara's death, but she was just a means to an end. She was the mother of his child/ren, but that didn't mean he had to like her. He grew impatient as she pushed and nothing happened. He took to pacing, sure his own restlessness was doing nothing for her but dammit, what was he supposed to be doing? Encouraging her? "Keep pushing." He growled as he paced. That should do it, right? At some point, she almost looked like she wanted to fall unconscious but he wasn't going to let that happen. No, she needed to keep pushing and stay awake. He growled in warning again, his eyes narrowing. If he had to push on her stomach himself to make something happen, he would do it.
Then something happened. He turned to Inara as something slid out of her, a small lump of something...but it was moving. His eyes widened and he froze for a second as she pulled the lump to her. Something inside him lurched up, possessive and angry. His lips curled and he almost lunged at Inara, as if afraid she might hurt the pup, but he stopped himself when he saw her licking the child, cleaning her coat. Was she supposed to do that? He guessed the child wasn't supposed to stay grimy and dirty. She was awfully dirty. He wrinkled his nose but couldn't stop watching. Her coat was more like Inara but she had a russet patch on her neck, almost like his own mohawk but reversed. His child. He felt his heart twist inside him as his gaze softened in wonder and awe.
He was a father. This was it. He watched carefully as Inara put the pup down at her stomach. At first he didn't understand. What happens now? But then he saw the pup suckling at her stomach, seeming to gain satisfaction from it. He didn't really recall anything from his own birthing so he didn't remember this part but it made sense. Milk. the pup was getting nutrients and milk from Inara, in a way, eating her out of her own nutrients. It was a good in-between for his other fantasy of aliens. He felt his lips tugging into a smile as he took a hesitant step toward them. Inara laid her head down but didn't close her eyes. She looked exhausted, but there was no sympathy in his eyes. He only nodded. "She's beautiful. I think I'll call her...Nissa." His eyes never left the child as he said it, watching her feed on Inara. He sat down, still watching her, unable to take his eyes off of her even for one second.
She was perfect His daughter. He didn't even wait to hear if Inara agreed or disagreed with the name. He said it like it was final, no arguments. When he felt Inara's gaze still, he scowled. "Sleep. I'll watch her." It sounded more like a command than anything, but every time he mentioned the pup, his eyes glowed with affection like he'd never felt before. It was easy to see he was already enthralled with her presence.
