Orillia Naturalists' Club

The next meeting of the Orillia Naturalists’ Club will be Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Orillia Museum of Art and History on Peter Street South.
The speaker will be Dr. Tom Edge, Adjunct Professor, Department of Biology, McMaster University.
His subject will be 'Advances in DNA sequencing: How we will assess water quality in the future.'
Edge conducts water microbiology research at McMaster University in Hamilton. He received his Ph.D. in environmental microbiology from Carleton University, an M.Sc. from the University of Ottawa, and a B.Sc. from the University of Guelph.
Edge worked for Environment Canada for many years, most recently at its National Water Research Institute In Burlington.
He has investigated waterborne pathogens and the microbiology of source water used for drinking, recreation and food production.
He now focuses on applying DNA analysis technologies for better characterizing water quality and determining the sources of pollution causing water quality impairments like beach closures.
This is a subject very much in the news lately, and will help us understand how we are being protected.
Visitors are welcome. Contact Donald Macdonald: 705-327-0735.
