Counting a Big flock of Evening Grosbeaks - Bracebridge

This many birds is hard to count. You get about halfway through the flock and they all flush into the trees. So I took a wide angle photo of the back yard and counted the number in each square of a 500 pixel grid overlay in a photo editing program. Total was 167. They were so thick in some spots I could have made a few errors, maybe + or - 5 at the most. Location: Hwy 118E, 8 km east of Bracebridge.

It is great to see large numbers of evening grosbeaks again at our feeders. We have not counted this many since the 1970s and 80s. With the help of 50 redpolls, 9 morning doves, 5 blue jays and 6 red squirrels they eat around 5 pounds of sunflower seed per day and would likely eat more if I offered it.
