I read the other day that many immigrants at our southern border want to be apprehended by authorities; this, so that they can apply for asylum and either be accepted into the country on that basis or be released into the country while awaiting for the adjudication of their cases and then never showing up before the judge. (Although I've read that the latter number is not as large as has been suggested).
This caused me to try to nail down the basis for accepting someone into the country as an asylum seeker.
Based upon the criteria for accepting asylum seekers as outlined in the below-linked article, it doesn't look like all that many seeking asylum on our southern border would qualify; e.g., seeking to break out of poverty and find a better way of life, or seeking to get away from areas of violent crime, doesn't make the cut.
