The photograph in the clip is different from the one which I understand to be the inspiration for the poem. I have only seen very poor reproductions of this photo, but if I can find a decent copy I will post it on the site. I think it would be very difficult to identify any of the men from it.
William Henry Hughes was born in Hebden Bridge (1894), and lived there in 1901 and when he married in 1920. I can't find him on the 1911 census, but assume he lived in Hebden Bridge. There are certainly other LF recruits from Hebden Bridge that I have come across (I will post details seperately).
I suppose it is quite posible that Ted Hughes made up the whole story about the six men (he was a poet after all), but it's a fine poem whether based on real people or not.
