The Lancastrian White Man and his Self Inflicted Injuries

The string below about Calypso Hop brought to mind a tale about that trip. Not long after our arrival we had a little R&R and our platoon was conveyed by three tonner to a local public beach in Kingston. There I was to learn exactly why the North American Indians referred to the European settlers as the ' whiteman '. Only days before we had all been at Weeton Camp during a typical Lancastrian dull wet month and here we were all enjoying a very hot sunny day on a beautiful beach in Jamaica! The beach was full of locals and those ' Europeans ' who had clearly lived there for some time who were bronzed and tanned in the way that holiday tourists could only dream of. Against all this were thirty odd very very white Lancastrian squaddies who stood out like targets on a shooting range!
That day was also memorable because I got very badly sunburnt on my shoulders and neck. Later that day I ended up with extremely large blisters just where webbing straps would sit. " Self Inflicted Injuries " came to mind had I reported sick so I had to endure a few days of extreme pain!
It was worth it though....I was 17 years old and during our trip to Jamaica we got to visit Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Dunne River Falls, the Blue Mountains and many other fascinating places. To do that same trip now privately would cost a fortune. My one and only regret is that at 17 I was far to young to fully appreciate how fortunate I was. I would go again in an instant....if someone else paid Ha Ha. Happy days of long ago.
Geoff P
