Why are United fans always upset when Liverpool fans are happy? IP: 126.96.36.199 Posted on March 14, 2019 at 01:00:55 PM by John Motson
Firstly, congratulations on your (presumably) very recent decision to become interested in football.
The long answer is that there is a long-standing, bitter enmity between the two clubs. Many sources think this may have developed from inter-city tensions that began as long ago as the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, which allowed the merchants of Manchester to import goods without the need to pay fees to the port of Liverpool. The rivalry developed through the 20th century, particularly from the 1970s onwards as both teams vied to become the dominant force in English football, reaching a peak as United surpassed Liverpool's record number of league titles.
The short answer is that many fans of both clubs are ****s.
