I agree that the situation of having the year-after-year payouts exceed the year-after-year intakes for both Medicare and Social Security is unsustainable.
However, as has been stated in the past on this website , I think the solution has to be based upon making these programs self-sustaining by increasing the intakes rather than by decreasing the payouts.
As I recall from some earlier calculations, in the case of Social Security, this could be achieved by increasing the eligibility age by a couple of years and by increasing the premiums for both employees and employers by about 2.5%. Replies:
