Early Spring kick start

Activity sure picked in my view this past week; started off with a Barred Owl hunting around our feeder in the early morning semi-darkness, then on the river a male Hooded Merganser showed up, followed by Herring gulls, 2 pairs of Canada Geese, six Common Mergansers, a couple of Mallards and the usual half dozen Common Goldeneye. Thursday morning our neighborhood Merlin announced its arrival and a Northern Shrike showed up in the afternoon to keep the feeder birds in hiding. A couple of river Otters have been active on the ice and a raccoon has been raiding my suet feeders.

One interaction on the water was interesting; a male Goldeneye surfaced from a dive only to have a Herring Gull threaten to land on his head, so he immediately submerged, the gull landed and scooped up his abandonned catch which turned out to be a small crayfish.
