Pileated Regulars

A male and female Pileated continue to be regulars. Although more skittish than most of the other birds, they are willing to sit on the suet while you stand three feet away on the other side of the window. It isn't uncommon for the male to work the suet for 10 minutes or more at a time.




Today the female appeared to take a piece of suet and then work it into and under some bark in a nearby Oak.





When the Pileated left, a Blue Jay immediately flew to the branch and began to work the bark.





When the Jay left, a female Hairy moved right in and started into the bark.




It's a nice parade as the Nuthatches and even the Chickadees will hang around the suet when the larger birds are busy elsewhere. I've never had a winter where there are so few birds at the feeders yet there is much heavier interest in the suet.
