Game rating eventually became irrelevant because:
Maybe we can think of jai-alai hcap theory as like Battlebots with a variety of competing designs.
Game rating may be questionable, but 'game class' rating for me is essential.
You might have players who can't make a dent in the late games - where their deficiencies are routinely exploited - but can dominate in the earlies. Straymar listed a few like that and said that their results made no sense. But maybe it does, and therefore in judging their early game chances, you would be unwise to use the late games results as a demerit.
The logic is very simple. If you are trying to gauge how well Amigorena and Elgezabal will do in singles against their fellow late game backs, you absolutely don't care if they were sliced and diced the few times they went up against Erik, Zulaika, Diego, and Barandika. Objection... Irrelevant. What matters is how they perform against their peers.
Similarly, how a player does with his least productive partners in the worst posts might actually be inversely correlated with how he does with his top partners in the "Ah, Juicy Fruit" posts.
But devising handicapping concepts is a form of competition, so to each their own.
