Eurig
WE'RE SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING MORE

It’s was so loud, the roar, as it echoes through the cave and vibrates across his body feeling it tremor in his bones. But he doesn’t move, fear striking him and staking him to the ground. He can only watch, an observer of the events that were about to unfold, through wide white rimmed eyes. The color pales from his dark face and his mouth runs cotton dry as he becomes oddly aware of his parched tongue, it felt larger than usual. A moment of clarity through the cloud of fear.

Ruby comes scurrying from the mouth of the cave. Large dark flightless wings flapping at the wind. Her feet strong and true beat heavily against the ground. Each step thrummed in his ears like the tune of a horror show.

Behind her comes a great looming shape. The tongue of the cave-beast, Eurig thinks, his breath hitching in his chest. This is it, I’m going to die. How stupid he had been, he should have never come out here, never alone. If he has the chance again he would consider himself learned.

The darkening evening beckons, the shadows move as the last light of the dying sun highlight the creatures face.

It, he, wasn’t a tongue, it was a gorilla.

Eurig didn’t know what he would have feared most but the big beast was terrifying. The air stilled in his presence and everything quieted as if waiting for him to make the next move.

Instead, it spoke, which surprised Eurig even more. If his eyes could grow wider, they did. The large gorilla which ate up the space in the mouth of the cave was probably the most scary moment of his life. But as the gorilla turns something overcame Eurig.

Perhaps it was the parent like words that had been muttered into the air. That authority that Eurig so lacked in the orphanage. Maybe it was how bullied he’d been by the other kids. Looking back, the only thing Eurig would be able to call it is foolish.

He wasn’t a hero, and he wasn’t brave.

“No.” Heat rushed to his young face returning it to color, and his hands pulled tightly against his mouth blocking further defiance.

Behind him he heard Aneira growl, the prissy cat, for whatever she was worth, was warning Eurig not to step on the gorillas toes and not at the gorilla itself. Eurig nervously clears his throat and lets his hands fall from his face. “I mean, I’m sorry to disturb you,” he squeaked through tightly pursed lips.

Eurig knew he wouldn’t be able to find his way back to town in the dark, he also knew that even if he found a good area to sleep in it would never be far enough from this creature. He’d sleep with one eye open through the night. Plus, from the whispers of the townsfolk, strange creatures roamed the night. Creatures, plural, which only meant this wasn’t the only thing that was lurking in the darkness.

He was at an impasse. And he didn’t know quite how to fix it.
