2019 Owl Survey

For the past 12 years I have been participating in the Ontario Nocturnal Owl Survey. My route is along the Housey Rapids Road. The route consists of 10 stations spaced 2km apart and takes approx 4 hours to complete after dusk. The provincial average has been approx 4.3 birds per route. Up until this year my record number has been 13 in 2017. I can say I have seen an increase in numbers over these past 12 years. Mostly Barred owls but sometimes a Great Horned or Saw-Whet or Screech owl. This year I am pleased to tell you we heard 18 owls and saw most of them (this may be a Central Ontario Record) but we wont know until all counts are in. I am very pleased to see so many owls this year. 16 Barred and two Great Horned. I also thought i heard a Saw-Whet but could not confirm it.

The Muskoka Bird Board is a place to share reports of birds and other nature sightings in Muskoka and surrounding areas. You may also post a question about birds or birding in general. You don't have to include an email address in your post. Remember to include the location of your sightings - even the nearest town or major crossroads would be fine.
