Political Endorsements by Association IP: 97.96.177.108 Posted on April 17, 2019 at 02:49:01 PM by Jeffrey L Smith
The Retiree’s Association’s decision to make a political endorsement or denunciation of a candidate by a select few members at a social gathering does not reflect the political position of the entire membership and nor should it. If the association’s true objective is to represent the interest of its membership, the Association should remain politically neutral and be more transparent and not mislead or misrepresent the political views of the entire membership. The Association needs to understand that the decisions made a select few members claiming to speak for all retirees is not accurate, and that rank-and-file retirees should be left to make their own political endorsement based on their own personal values and beliefs. Those individuals who claim to speak for the entire Association membership regarding political endorsements should familiarize themselves with the Associations objectives:
The objectives of this Association are: Promotion and Encouragement of social and post retirement interaction between the firefighters and police officers who have retired from the Tampa Fire and Police Departments; to bring to the attention of the Fire and Police Pension Board, local, state and federal governments, those issues of collective concern to the association regarding pension or retirement benefits, or potential benefits; to inform the members of the association on matters of mutual interest through news bulletins; and to meet at least quarterly to enjoy social and professional fellowship.
