At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

Now My Watch Begins; It Shall Not End Until My Death

Feelings…emotions. These things that always plagued Ghost. It was why he wanted to be alone. Feelings always made things too complicated. He much preferred to be lonely, a feeling that he had encountered often enough that he fully understood and could cope with. But when someone talked to him about joining a pack, like he could contribute something. Like he was worth something and that maybe he shouldn’t be entirely alone. That was when he began to feel weird and uncertain and uncomfortable. The only time he had ever felt like he belonged or enjoyed the emotions he felt was when he was with NeMO. And look how that had turned out. It just proved that it wasn’t worth it at all. It was better to be alone and act like he was happy that way. But now life was complicated again. He was a father, something that he had been avoiding and doing the exact opposite of what he wanted. Ghost had always promised himself he would only father young when it was with a mate, and to avoid creating bastards as he had been created. But then he went ahead and did just that. And then he left them. Just like his mother left him. And now he had become exactly what he feared.

Thoughts of uncertainty and unease were clearly written on the snow white male’s face. And if Ghost had been paying more attention to the vampire he would see how annoyed and inpatient the other male was becoming. But Ghost was too lost in his own thoughts. Could this work out this time? Could he be a better team player and give to a pack? Or would he just mess it up again and cause more problems? Was it worth the risk? Suddenly, without thinking it through, he just blurted out the words. He wanted the other male to bite him. To turn him. To give him purpose in life again. He could start over. He could be a better father and find his kin. He could be a better pack member and contribute and try. Maybe this time it would work out. His words seemed to shock the vampire, and Ghost’s almost unnaturally crimson orbs widened. Did he say the wrong thing? Paws shuffled anxiously, waiting to see if he had changed his mind. Maybe he saw through Ghost and saw that he wasn’t worth it. Maybe he would just walk away. God he hoped not.

But the other brute did not change his mind. And real relief swam through Ghost. He had made his decision and he was happy to stick with it. Now the rest was just up to the other male. For some reason he trusted him. He figured it wouldn’t be fun to turn into some dead creature of the night. But with this stranger that he for whatever trusted, he knew it would be okay. Ghost watched with curiosity as the vampire began to change before him. His eyes were still glowing their unnatural red, and then his canines began to elongate, and a drop of…something…fell from one of them. It made the white male shiver. When he asked where, it caught Ghost by surprise. He was not expecting him to ask that. Didn’t they all just bite the neck or something? Eyes blinked slowly as he contemplated the question. He would have rather the other being just do it…just decide for him. But it was going to be him that was bitten, so it made sense in a way.

Ghost circled around the brute slowly as he thought, not just about where but about the life decision he had just made. He was taking in the other male in a different light. He of course had already noticed his brightly glowing eyes, but now he noticed a bright red spot on the fur of his muscular shoulder. It was not just a stain that blood would leave from a kill, but something more. Something significant. So where did he want to let this male sink his fangs into him? Having trouble deciding, as Ghost did with any decision, no matter how small, he began thinking out loud, mumbling incoherently to himself. Well it’s not like he would pick something stupid like his leg or anything like that. But the words he thought were being spoken out loud remained in his head. And in his thoughts, he had lifted his left hind limb up, as if offering it to the vampire and not still internally thinking. Before he could realize what he had done, the beast bit down on him. The pain was quick and fierce, and Ghost let out a yelp of surprise, instinct trying to pull his paw away, but the male had clamped down tightly, and instead Ghost just fell onto his side, his limb held up by the other male.

The vampire only held onto him for a few moments before he let go and drew back. Ghost’s leg fell limply, and he stared at the two puncture marks, blood beginning to seep out. That was it? He looked up to the vampire, about to question him, when the pain hit him. Ghost had been hurt before, but this was entirely different. This was a pain that he had never imagined, a pain that he didn’t think was possible to be real. He heard someone scream, piercing and loud, before he realized that it was he who was screaming. He heard pieces of words between his cries. Gritting his teeth to force out words between the screams, he glared at the other male. ”Thanks for the heads up.” His words were cold as ice, anger and pain coursing through his veins as the venom made its way through his system. It caused agonizing pain to every part of his body that it touched, traveling from his leg to his head to heart and back to the rest of his body. When it reached his heart, it reached a new level of agony. How it could get any worse he didn’t know, but it had. His throat was raw from screaming as he thrashed on the ground, begging for it to end, for his body to just die already so he didn’t have to feel this anymore. He didn’t care that he would be leaving behind his life and his family. He didn’t care about anything but making it stop.

Every one of the vampire’s words came true. The pain went on and on, no matter how much Ghost begged for it to stop. There was an intense pressure all around his being, in every one of his veins and arteries. And then the pressure began to build up more and more, until it broke. And blood began to pour from every orifice he had. And the pressure grew and grew until his eyes literally fell from his skull. He didn’t think he could scream anymore, but he was screaming once more. As loud as he could. If he was going to suffer this badly the world was going to know about it. And then the pain reached a new crescendo and his heart couldn’t take it….so it stopped. All of the pain stopped all at once as the last of his blood trickled from his being. His form was entirely still, not spasming or seizing anymore. And then his dead heart beat once…paused…and beat again. It was the slowest heart beat, and surely not enough to keep a creature alive. But the blood, vampire blood, slowly began to move through his veins and arteries again. His eyelids had shut, covering the holes that had been left behind when the orbits fell out. His muscles began to twitch slowly, coming back to life. But in a different way. After moments of this dead state, Ghost took a shuddering breath. When he opened his eyes, the world was entirely different. His scenes, especially his eyesight, were heightened. He could see everything perfectly, as if it were the middle of the day. His new globes were glowing the brightest unnatural red.

As his form began to be able to move again, he slowly got to his paws. He turned to look at where the vampire…Rogan he had said…had bitten him. The spot was a deep crimson red. It stood out starkly from the rest of his ghostly white pelt. Somehow his subconscious had registered the words that Rogan spoke. And all of them had been true. His form swayed a little as he sat up fully. ”Ghost…my name is Ghost. What’s a saidu?” His vocals were raw and rough from all the screaming, and he sat waiting to see what would happen now. Now that he was a vampire.
