At the densest section of the forest, there is a brief clearing where a steady flow of water streams down the slippery stone staircase. The water here is cool and refreshing. Staircase Falls has been rumoured to be the place where reality is met by magic; where peaceful spirits dwell. They are rumoured to have healing powers that are used to help the desperately hurt, though no one has experienced this, except for, perhaps, Kaive.

It’s Strange What Desire Will Make Foolish People Do

Some would describe Keres as weak for how willing he was to follow others, specifically his brother and sister. He would not just do whatever any random wolf demanded, but he would do anything for his siblings. Even acts that he morally was opposed to. His own moral compass was too weak for him to go against them. So in a sense, he was weak. And compared to his siblings, he was physically weak as well. They had both trained in fighting and to be assassins more than he ever did. Their parents didn’t ignore him though by any means. They saw that he was not a cold blooded killer, and that he didn’t enjoy fighting or taking lives as his other family did. So instead of trying to force him to be something he was not or to push him away from the family, they figured out what he was naturally good at. Keres was happier in the background, and so they used that to give him an advantage. He learned how to be as quiet and hidden as a shadow, so no one would ever see or hear him coming. He learned how to mask his scent and so he could sneak into any area, take whatever was needed. Whether that be something physical or whispered words and secrets. He could have made an excellent assassin had he had a more violent bone in his being, but instead he was a thief, a Zasael as they named him.

But Keres’ skills were not needed today, not when he was around his siblings and their Rohun. All three of them knew what he was, and so it was easy for him to be quiet and let his siblings take charge of the situation. He listened intently, knowing that information was as deadly as a bite. Keres arrived a few moments after Lothris, and Vozurr shortly after him. All three addressed Zagan respectfully, knowing that he was the one that led them here and he was the one to take charge. Lothris, being the unique femme that she was, greeted her brothers in her own fashion. She leapt at them, snapping as if to harm them. When she first began these games, Keres used to flinch away from her, knowing that he never stood a chance in a real fight with her. But now he expected it of her, and it was now a constant game with them. Without flinching from her snap, he curled his lip in a silent snarl at her, as if he was angry. But they both knew that he was not. Instead of immediately telling the triplets what to do, he asked them where they wanted to start with this meeting.

Keres looked to the leader with uncertainty, what did he mean where did they want to start? Didn’t he have a plan for them? Wasn’t that the point of them all following him here? Luckily, Lothris’ bold character took charge, leaving Keres the opportunity to remain silent as he liked. “Sugar, we will begin wherever you tell us to. This land is full of fucking weaklings deserving of being put down to end their shame. We should cut through them first until we find something worthy to actually sharpen our claws upon.” He flinched slightly at her words, hoping that the others didn’t notice. While he had killed plenty, he didn’t want to in the way that they did. Why did they have to just kill those that were innocent? Just because they were there and not part of their bloodline, did that mean they had to die? In the other Asokuh’s mind it did. But Keres was uncertain. All he could do now was hope that whatever it was that they did, he wouldn’t be forced to make another decision that would haunt him. How many more bodies would he add to his current list? His yellow orbs glanced to his brother for a moment, waiting to see what his reaction to all of this was. He turned back to focus on Zagan, waiting to see what response he would have to his sister’s thought. Unless he was asked a direct question, he would remain silent, would remain a shadow.
