Gonna Have to Do Better Than That

This place was new to her but she was determined to make it her home. She'd find a herd and build her own garden just like her mother had. She'd find a strong stallion to watch over them like her father was. She still had the scars to prove his strength. He liked to show his mares who was boss. For her parents, that was their way of showing affection. It was all she knew. She didn't know that she'd found her way to a place that allowed stallions to come claim mares for themselves. She told herself she wouldn't let a stallion just invite her to his herd. Oh no, that wouldn't work at all. She would choose her own protector. Not just anyone would do.

She smelled him before anything, her head snapping around to let her blue and brown eye fall on his shiny dark coat. It was intriguing, how it wasn't all one color. No one could say he was just chestnut or bay or even grullo. He was a mixture of all these colors, like blood running over the charred ground. Then his mane and tail were white silk, flowing like the ocean itself had brushed it out. She tilted her head, admiring him for a moment. He wasn't at all like the harsh colors of her own father with his black and white spots, colliding against each other like life and death.

When he grinned, her eyes narrowed. Now that, that reminded her of her father. She'd know that predatory look anywhere. Her tail lifted in challenge, her head raising as her ears pinned daringly. She was young but she had dominance running in her own blood and she wouldn't be put down, not by anyone. She charged her and she stood her ground, snorting as she pawed the ground. She heard his words and she laughed. "Funny, I don't see your name stamped on my flesh, little lizard." As he reached out, she braced, knowing what was coming. The moment his teeth touched her flesh, she squealed, spinning with haunting speed as she tucked her hindquarters and kicked out with both hooves.

"I don't think you meant that, little boy. My grandmother bites harder." She teased him even as he came to push against her. Tossing her head, she pushed back, even knowing she wasn't going to move him very far. She snaked out, trying to bite at his neck and withers, anything to get a rise out of him.
