He didn't like this perpertual feeling of being stuck. With no family ties seeking him out and giving him purpose, he was left to be a shadow and spy on other wolves. He stuck to the free lands, not wanting to bring too much attention to himself by getting too close to a pack border. Instead, he hid behind bushes and rocks, watching wolves interact with each other and then finding private places to practice showing emotion. Some were easier than others. He watched wolves fight and bicker sometimes. That reminded him of his parents, how they used to fight all the time. Anger was an easy one. Raised voice, narrowed eyes, snarling lips. He could do that. It was the more positive emotions that gave him trouble. Like smiling. He was still trying to make it look and feel natural. He stared at his reflection in bodies of water and tried it out several times but each time it looked more like a grimace than an actual smile. What was he doing wrong? Other wolves made it look so easy. They smiled and laughed and grinned, all looks of joy and excitement. He just looked angry when he tried to grin, more like he should be growling. He even tried laughing but it sounded fake and pathetic to his own ears. Too forced, too detached. He growled in frustration, but he kept trying. He found himself in the forest today, pacing the trees, looking for more wolves to study. As he walked, he tried to laugh again, each one sounding more crazed than the last.
