Yesterday was an interesting one. Three times in the afternoon and early evening, I watched drama unfold as parent birds defended their nests/young. The first was just north of Barrie when a Cooper's hawk (assuming based on tail and size) darted up just above the highway with a pair of Red-winged blackbirds in hot pursuit.
When I got home and started barbecuing dinner, a tremendous uproar rose in the woods behind the house. I don't know what bird the distress cry was coming from but it created a reaction from many other grackles, blackbirds and a few passerines for good measure. A few minutes later the source emerged: a Merlin was behind that. In an evening drive around the farm fields east of us, a Kestrel veered up from the grass with a pair of Killdeers screeching their anger just inches behind.
