The moment the stranger mentioned the prairie, Han forgot about the mare and foal. Now here was something worth his time. His mother had mentioned the prairie before: how it was a rolling expanse of grasslands beyond the forest, ruled over by a red stallion that once been allies with his grandfather but that had not got along with his mother. Han could not remember why Evren and Shamwari had fought, for it had not interested him at the time, but since he and his mother had come to the forest, he had often looked out from the thinning edge of the trees across the open landscape beyond. Its unfamiliarity intrigued him, yet he had not yet summoned up the bravery to cross its borders. He did not know if Shamwari still ruled there, but the presence of this young mare was heavy evidence he did.

"Han," he replied after a short pause, and studied Primrose with dark, introspective eyes. "Did... did you say Shamwari?" His gut roiled with anxiety and excitement all at once. Thoughts raced through his mind. What if she had snuck here? What if Shamwari was coming to find her? What if Evren came looking for him and saw Shamwari and the two of them fought again and then Persephone kicked them out? Just in case, Han turned his head this way and that to check that no one had followed either of them. The mare and foal still lingered in the distance, but they might as well have been trees for all they interested Han now.
