Evren regarded Persephone with a smile, and there was a moment of quiet in which they both seemed to listen for faint sounds emanating from the forest. Evren’s heart quickened with excitement and for a strange moment she felt an overwhelming urge to laugh. This situation was so out of the ordinary, and the added tension of being alone with Persephone only added fuel to the fire. Adrenaline sang in Evren’s blood.
“Gods, who knows,” she replied with a shake of her head. “I’m so sorry for bursting in on your meeting like that, but I couldn’t help myself. I hadn’t seen that kid in years. What was he asking before I arrived? Will he and that mare be staying?”
A lightbulb went off in Evren’s head, and her face brightened. “I remember what I wanted to talk to you about now! In fact… I actually wanted to thank you. For taking Han and me in. And for, well, being so supportive, and helping me bring him back. It really means a lot.” Evren’s smile softened, and her amber-brown eyes sought Persephone’s with sincerity. “I know this was just meant to be a temporary setup, while Han and I decided what to do with ourselves… but honestly, I’ve found a kind of peace here that I don’t think I would get back in the desert.
“So while I can’t speak for Han, given that he’s grown now and may want to take his own path at some point… I wanted to ask if I might stay here with you. For good. You know I’m an experienced leader, so I could help you run things and help the herd flourish. And… I could be here for you, as you’ve been here for me.”
