thoth
we spend all our time running for our lives, going nowhere
Oh right, a ren. That made sense, even if being described as powerful enough to see it made Thoth’s skin prickle uncomfortably. He had never felt or been labelled as powerful. Mostly, Thoth’s life had been a never-ending stream of people, from peers to politicians to priests, going out of their way to make him feel anything but powerful. It was difficult to picture himself in the position of holding power over someone else, especially someone as strong and masculine as Mace.

The flickering light etched deeper shadows across the lines on Mace’s face. Thoth’s shoulders tensed slightly as he reached up to rub his temples with his fingertips; this action usually preceded a telling-off. No such scolding followed, however. Instead, Mace proceeded to think aloud in a tone of voice which Thoth didn’t recognise on him. Assuming the question was aimed at him (it had been spoken aloud in a space where he was the only one capable of understanding it, unless Mace had learned to speak unicorn, therefore it must be for him), he answered it.

“Probably start with getting dressed.” He suggested helpfully. “And pack supplies. Sometimes if I’m going to be away for more than a couple of hours I leave a note with Tris to let him know where I’ve gone. Or I send Toby back with a note.”

He paused, watching Eris rub circles with her horn against the tent ceiling, calculating what his next move would be after that. He brought his knees up to his chest and rested his lower arms on them.

“First stop would probably be Laketon.” He mused. “Good place to ask around and see if anyone’s seen anything like it. I’d try Murray’s shop first. Then I’d go to the parts of Shaman which were pulled from Earth rather than newly created at the planet’s conception, since I’d hypothesise it’s more likely to be in one of those regions.” He reached up to scratch his chin. “And I’d ask the birds for help. Owls have the most frontally placed eyes among all avian groups and thus have the largest binocular fields of vision.”
