Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I watch as this mare takes notice of me, but doesn't shy away or become aggressive in nature. Her interest piques my own, and suddenly my worries about my family and the Prairie begin to melt away, if only temporarily. It was a nice reprieve, even if it was only meant to be a short one, to live in the present and to talk about something other than strategy and safety and what came next for keeping my family safe. The role of a herd stallion was daunting, but rewarding, of course. I was just craving a distraction. And today happened to be one of those days where some casual banter with someone unfamiliar sounded just as exciting as it was fleeting. Hopefully this newcomer would feel the same.

My brown eyes lock with her set of blues, and I offer the pretty stranger a friendly lopsided smirk as I approach. She seems friendly enough, though cautious, as one would expect at this time of year. As such I wait to gauge her interest before coming any closer. Luckily for me, she is agreeable, so I nicker again hoarsely. "Please don't call me sir," I say, the grin still ever-present across my whiskered lips. "You make me sound old." I say playfully with the flick of my thick red tail over my haunches. "My name is Shamwari. What's yours?"

I let her take control of what comes next, but a chill shoots down the length of my spine in anticipation as she invites me in with the arch of her neck and a few quick huffs from the flaring of her pink nostrils. I take a few more steps to close the short gap between us, and extend my own muzzle to offer a cordial exchange of breath.

"Is it that obvious?" I respond, after having never retreated from our closer distance, to her latest question. My heart is beating quickly in my chest as I can feel the soft, pitter-patter of her warm exhales against my chest in our closer proximity. "I was born here, actually. In the Prairie - it's a territory on the neighboring island of Luthien. I might be biased, but I find it to be the most enchanting of the entire chain." I explain, my eyes still keeping in line with hers. "You must be new." I say, cocking my heavy head to one side as I study her. "What brings you here?"

The passing crisp autumn breeze brings a new scent with it, and my demeanor begins to change. I'd recognize that putrid musk anywhere. Rougaru, it seems, was near. Immediately my head shoots high over my withers, and my ears lace back against my poll, burying themselves in a bed of firey red mane. It's not long before the stallion appears, and rudely makes his presence known by trying to butt his way into the conversation. I snort as he approaches, and eye my companion before defensively taking a step in front of her. I paw furiously at the ground in warning to the intruding stallion - it was time to back off.

"I'm sorry. It seems you'll learn pretty quickly that not everyone who lives here has any semblance of manners or decency." I spat, but my eyes are trained on the large nuisance of a stallion standing before me. Up until a few weeks ago, I didn't even know who Rougaru was. But he was something akin to a splinter - an annoyance, a prick that seemingly festered. I knew nothing of his family or of hies ties to the island - but clearly he didn't have strong ones, as he seemed to come and go as he pleased. But fester he did - because he now had Sanibel, a mare who'd bore my daughter and someone I'd sworn to protect. I'd heard rumors by now that he was known to use force and rape to get what he wanted. Or at least, that's what Celestria had insinuated - a mare whom came from the Inlet and one I did not know had any connection to Rougaru at all.
