Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Once, before the wolf’s voyage, the ocean had been a beautiful thing with its green tides and white caps. As he stood with his neck arched behind him to steal a final glance, the sea looked black. Black and awful with the memory of his struggle to shore. His front legs wobbled, then, at the wrists and gave way beneath him. Hitting the ground so suddenly should have hurt, but all he could do was sigh in relief. Dusk had followed him in from the shore and was settling around him, nearly as heavy as his eyelids.

When Arkin woke, so did the dull ache in his joints and muscles. He was a long long way from the rolling valleys of his home and some part of him ached for that too. But there was nothing left there for the son of Dredic. The war had taken everything, including pieces of who he once was, and he had known this insatiable hunger for change ever since.

The burly wolf stood and tried to shake out the uncomfortable way his salty coat had dried against him. Right, then. He thought, surveying for the first time this strange and nameless land that the tide had washed him up on. From his father, Arkin had inherited a head for logic, an affection for his mother, but also a wariness towards the outside world. He often watched his father gaze out past the pack borders like he was expecting something and there was always a tightness around his eyes that indicated it might be something bad. Try as he may, he could not look out at this new place with that perception. Arkin was still young and despite his experiences, they had not yet marred his hope for something greater.

The early hours of the day made the air dappled and vibrant. Arkin breathed in new air as his steps carried him away from the sea.
