His large paws sunk in the loose, white sand until he was far enough from the water that the earth felt more firm. Soon, sand turned to a light colored soil that only his claws left divots in. That’s when he heard the other’s approach. Immediately, his ears swiveled to catch what noise he could and his nose worked through the light breeze for information about this stranger. But she had been close and came into view quicker than he’d expected.
She didn’t charge in aggressively, she simply seemed...curious. His muscles, which he hadn’t noticed had tensed, unwound some in relief. Behind him, his banner found a neutral height. “‘Morning.” Arkin greeted, pleasant, naturally polite even though his body wasn’t entirely relaxed. It was the first time he’d used his voice in some time and his throat still ached from the salt water he had gasped when the waves charged him. Hazel eyes glanced again around them. She was alone here but her fur was imbued with scents that he didn’t yet know. This land didn’t seem claimed to him but he hadn’t yet seen enough of it to say with confidence. “I hope I haven’t wandered up the shore in a wrong direction.” It wasn’t a question, but he made it sound like one.
