Hi Colin
Sadly service records are not held locally. You would have to apply to the Historical Disclosures Department of the Army Records Office at Glasgow. This is something that only you or a member of your family can do. Click on the link below and read through the procedure to be followed. Basically you will have to download a Subject Request Form and a Kinship Form. The Kinship Form will be to prove your entitlement to the Service Record. You will be asked to supply a copy of his death certificate along with your application. A fee...currently 30 is charged for all applications irrespective of result. It normally takes up to 12 weeks to get a copy. Contrary to common belief it is not necessary to know his Regimental Number to obtain a record. It would of course be very helpful if you could quote it in your application in order to help them identify the correct man in their records.
Others can apply for a Service Record say professional researchers but they are subject to additional rules. They are normally only entitled to a ' restricted ' Service Record which contains basic details. It all depends upon how long ago the individual died.
It's not a particularly difficult task just the usual " tiresome " form filling.
