PRIME MINISTER'S DECREE

"None." - Leader

The Offspring

Diccon (Cicada x Khar'pern)

Rules

• The Vulcan Peak is where homeless mares come to live as a sisterhood. Stallions may not live here except as captives or companions for the Leaders.

• Warriors keep mainly to fighting, Thinkers keep mainly to raiding, and Politicians may do both, neither, or act as diplomats. Members may issue their own battles and raids, but should generally consult the General, Codebreaker or Prime Minister for permission.

• All major decisions are determined by vote, but the Prime Minister maintains order within the Peak and has the final say.

• Elections for leadership positions will be held every TLI summer, provided the qualifying criteria are met.

• You can find detailed information about how the Peak works on the Rules page.

night fell slowly on our glory days

Kune absorbs Božena’s tales of the Vulcans in silence, his dark, languid eyes watching her thoughtfully. The names she speaks of mean nothing to him--he cannot even imagine their faces--but it brings Kune a deep sense of peace to hear her talk about them. These horses are Božena’s found family, and Kune may meet them one day. He commits them all to memory.

Yet the more Božena talks, the more a heavy cloud seems to weigh down on them. At first Kune thinks it is simply their energy levels deteriorating, and indeed, his eyes have become glassy and he has to fight the urge to yawn. But when Božena lays her head upon the ground and releases a deep, trembling breath, Kune’s senses snap awake again, and he realizes that something is wrong.

“I miss them,” Božena says, and Kune presses his lips together. At first he thinks she is still talking about the Vulcans, but something about her manner says otherwise. When one has experienced a deep loss such as he has, one becomes attuned to it in others, as if grief is something that radiates from an individual like a cold, sickly smell. Kune can sense it radiating from Božena now.

For a moment he is uncertain what to do. They have not spoken of their traumas since that day in the meadow, and there has been an invisible barrier between them ever since. Kune is no wordsmith, and he knows that whatever empathetic noises he could come up with would not fix anything anyway. Yet his heart aches for Božena. He knows her pain all too well, to the point where it almost feels as though they share it together. When she hurts, he hurts too.

Kune closes his eyes and expels a deep breath. He thinks of that day in the meadow, when they had laid their hearts bare before each other, and he pushes past the boundary that holds him back now. Slowly, gently, he lays his thick neck across Božena’s. The contact makes his ears hot.

“If it would help ease your pain, you could tell me about them too,” he says, leaving the rest unsaid: But if silence is what you need, then my lips are sealed.
