Aplos Riverside

Moladion’s powerful, winding river...
Aplos River is a broad, slow-moving river originating from somewhere beneath the mountains of Spirane and feeding Iromar’s moors in the south. The northern parts of the river are known for their strong currents, with the water becoming slow moving in the south. The riverbanks vary along its course, ranging from soft hummock grasses to small groups of pine, and sometimes nothing but pebbles and sand. Crossing can be difficult at times, but it can be swam or bridged by fallen trees or boulders alike.

Home, he’d considered, could not be where he was from. In the end, it would be where he discovered light again after all had gone dark. Was that this place? It was too soon to know.

“A forest sounds nice.” Said Arkin thoughtfully, remembering the wolves of Ravilin back home- no, on Moon he corrected- and how their dark canopies and evergreens seemed to hold some sort of magic in them. He’d thought, even back then, that if anything was capable of luring him away from Dredic it would have been the call of the neighboring forest pack.

He didn’t have to think before answering her question.”I wouldn’t go back.”

Arkin glanced to her, realizing he may have answered too quickly. He’d sounded almost rude, he thought, and he hoped his face looked as apologetic as he meant to make it. He tried again, “There’s nothing left for me there. And anyway,” He gave her a lopsided smile and shook more water from his face for emphasis. “I think I learned my lesson with the sea. I suppose I’m, as you say, in between homes as well.”

He flexed his toes into the loose waterbed and then stepped closer to the bank, stopping for another drink before emerging. His coat was heavy with water but he felt less grimy and a little more himself. Arkin stepped politely out of range to shake out his fur and then after doing so, perched himself a short distance away from Sila. “You sounds an excellent blend of both your parents’ best qualities then.” He observed kindly. She had a reverent way of talking about them that made him think they were both gone. Was that how he sounded when he spoke of his parents? “I think the better parts of my parents were distributed between my brothers and I got what was left. And my sister,” Arkin chuckled a little. “I’m not convinced she’s anything like them. Raegan is her own breed.” He said is and not was, as he hoped that wherever her own travels had taken her, she was still well.

Arkin blinked a little faster but it was brief, and then he shifted where he sat and moved his eyes to the trees. “This forest you talk about, is it the pack that charms you or the place itself?” He wondered. Would it be such a bad thing to be a pack wolf again? He missed it, if he was being honest. He missed the camaraderie of it, and he considered there might be something vaguely glorious about having some other purpose again.
