A Robot Story. While Managing the TOW Program for Hughes at the factory in Tucson we were turning out over 2000 missiles per month . The production line was almost 100% manual with well qualified people as the program had been in production for several years . The Army visited often and noted, as an aside , that everything seemed to be done manually. Our circuit boards were extremely simple, one sided boards, no multi-layer, and two production workers loaded a simple capacitors manually as the boards flowed across their work stations. Solution...automate the installation of the capacitors to show the customer that we were modernizing. Result..a robot to do the job!. Needed a software engineer to program the computer, after getting a computer. Result , replaced two nice old ladies with a Computer, programmer, and a maintenance man to keep the whole system up and operating. Result, replaced two people making about $12/hr with a programmer at about $40K plus additional maintenance and monitoring to insure the whole system was operating properly. Sometimes the old ways are the best (But we had a Robot). Replies:
