Hi Les I can well remember on exercise that took place .it consisted of a long march and crossing the Dumersee lake using assault boats. The crossing was about one mile.Due to the freezing weather it was decided that because the lake was frozen solid we would pull the boats. The ice was about a foot thick near the bank but once you got out towards the centre of the lake.the noise of the ice creaking had quite a few bums twitching and had the lads moved closer to the boat.it finished up with the lads holding on to the sides and every time there was an extra loud screech or large crack appearing we would all make a dive into the boat.
Later the same winter I went to the army ski school at Winterberg I was asked by the Chief instructer one day to get the reading from the ground weather station to check what the temperature was.when I told him it was minus 25 he asked me to check it again
it was the same when i checked it again.Happy Days Larry_
