There was a time when I was alone

MY ONLY FRIEND WAS THE MAN IN THE MOON

The butterfly was enchanting. Delicate wings of periwinkle moved effortlessly through the air. It was alone, flitting from flower to flower with lazy nonchalance. What did a butterfly have to concern itself with? It gave little thought to the figure that watched it with rapt focus.

The young mare lay upon the grass, giving her full attention to the insect. A smile played upon her pink lips, nostrils quivering as she attempted to hold her breath. Long locks of charcoal pooled around her chest, curled around painted legs tucked neatly under her frame. Cream and ink stood out starkly against the field of flowers the mare had decided to lay in.

The butterfly flew closer to her still frame. Blue eyes widened a fraction before nearly crossing themselves over her muzzle. Upon her pink flesh stood the insect that had ensnared her focus. It's wings quivered, small legs kissing her flesh as it moved up her face. She dared not move as it travelled up to her auds and seemed to settle within the strands of her forelock. Her lungs burned for air but how could she breathe with such a magnificent creature upon her brow?

Finally it became too much and she exhaled harshly. The action caused her crown to shake and her body to spasm briefly as the breath was accompanied by a series of sneezing. It seemed holding your breath in a field full of flowers wasn't the smartest of ideas.

As soon as the sneezing fit came to an end, the young filly attempted to locate the periwinkle insect. The light touch upon her face was gone. Blue eyes dimmed with disappointment but did not halt their scan around the field. A few feet away, a dazed insect clambered to its feet and took to the air once more. This time away from the sneezing mare. Perhaps it sought a more stable surface to alight on.

"Oh dear. Won't you come back Mr.Butterfly?" the filly called out, longing entangled in her musical lyrics. The butterfly paid her no heed and was soon out of sight. "I must have given him such a fright! How inconsiderate of me."

The painted mare gave a despondent sigh before deciding it was time to rise. With a small push, she gathered her long pillars beneath herself and rose up to her considerable not very much at all height. "Maybe I can find another butterfly! I just need to control my breathing."
