Re(1): OFF TOPIC--JOKO GARBI--DIRECT ANCESTOR OF JAI ALAI Posted on March 19, 2020 at 04:33:51 PM by jsolo
This is where Jai Alai came from. In 1887 Melchor Geruciaga, a pelotari playing in South America, fractured his wrist playing joko garbi. When he returned, the wrist bothered him so he invented a new kind of cesta, the kind you see today at Dania and in the Basque Country. At first, the new invention drew laughter, but when Geruciaga showed people what could be done with it... well the rest is history.
Here is the ancestor sport. It is called Joko Garbi and it is played by amateurs in the Basque Country, on the short court. Check it out if you have the time, and you will see that it is a pretty amazing sport. This match was played in Pau (Iparralde-North Basque-France) in 2018. Note the difference in Cesta and the fact that you cannot hold the pelota. It has to be thrown in the samne motion as catching. Players can do some amazing things.
2016 Federation Francaise de Pelota Basque National A. Championship. Played at La Hallion.
