This is a rare occurrence. Six years ago, a couple from the north part of Barrie sent me a report of a black coloured red squirrel with photos. I went down and checked it out and we saw a family of red squirrels with normal coloured young and one totally black member. I sent this report to NHIC when I first received it. None of the staff had heard of this and thought it was just probably a small black Eastern Gray Squirrel. This was a report in Eastern Canada at the time and a couple of reports from the northern States. Since that time there have been several more reports of black red squirrels in Barrie. Don, when you say Barrie`s East End, could you give me an address of the general area since this may be a second colony. Replies:
