Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

The Prairie was empty.

The herd had already fled to the Thicket, where Ruger and Vassilla welcomed them in for safety. This was the first time I'd seen the land completely devoid of our kind. It was dead quiet. The sea breeze rolled in from the shoreline and whistled its way through the tall golden reeds. The wind lapped at the knotted mane against my thick neck, and my brown eyes surveyed the desolate landscape for the last time tonight.

Saying goodbye to the herd had been trying. I locked eyes with Sanibel, Caesisus, then Larka and finally Darshan, before enveloping each one in a tight embrace. I looked at the children we'd brought into this world together, and sternly reminded them this was now a time to listen to their mothers. And I watched quietly from the edge of Ruger's home as they stalked away, disappearing into the underbrush, which would hopefully keep them out of sight and out of mind from our enemies.

Then I waited.

I stood along the border of the Forest and the Prairie and listened. Hours went by and the stars twinkled overhead, until finally, they arrived. I heard their cries of battle from the shoreline, and stooped low from my vantage point among the hilly terrain to watch as the silhouettes of horses descended upon the Forest. It was difficult to discern in the night if they were friends or foes. They were likely both. As hoards of them washed in with the surf, I gathered myself and galloped off to find Persephone.

By the time I arrived in the heart of her woods, scuffles had already erupted. Bachelor stallions from Cullen's herd beat up against warrior mares from the Peak. I caught whiff of Warsaw among in the dead air, and my jaws clenched with fury. My honey-brown eyes searched through the layers of dark trees for his familiar ghostly form, and Persephone's and Evren's.

But then a familiar call rung through the air. Jabari.

I skidded my heaving frame to a halt, sending moist dirt and leaf litter to spray across the earth's floor. I craned my heavy head in the direction of my son's call, and searched the darkness for his two-toned frame. I trotted off through the dense underbrush with my nostrils flared and my head and tail raised. My eyes were wide and alert, and I only stopped when I finally found him. He was cast between Rougaru and Celestria, and Caesisus was there too, much to my shock and dismay.

I sucked in a quick breath, while I was still hidden by the Forest's dense foliage. My son stood defensively at Caesisus' side. But Rougaru and Celestria were clearly up to something. With a snort, I left the cover of the woods behind and strode up to stand next to my son, just in time to catch Celestria's last words. I cast Caesisus a serious glare along the way. My main priority was to get her out of here. My ears laced back against my poll as I sized up Rougaru.

"It's time for you both to leave."
