Live through this lie [claim]

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I stood solemnly each morning at the shoreline. My hooves sank easily into the damp, brittle sand and the cold seawater lapped at my ankles. My gaze drifted off into the angry dark waves, where I searched desperately for a bright spot. I willed it each and every morning, to see the white swaths of Jabari's two-toned coat, bobbing above sea level, as my boy returned home from the Lagoon. I stirred each morning since the turn of spring with a start, my heart hammering against the confines of my chest, summoning me back to the surf, where I'd wait for several long minutes, some days even an hour, for him to arrive.

But he never came.

My jaw clenched then, and I'd snort, before abandoning my watch for the usual morning patrol. The routine is the same each day, it seems. Even today.

It was an unusual time to be on the Crossing Isle, but I couldn't bare to watch the volatile seas anymore, seeking out their empty depths for a sign I knew that just won't come. Jabari was somewhere else. Maybe Cullen was holding him in the Lagoon with the impending war so close to breaking. Maybe he'd been picked up by one of my enemies on his trek home. I'd never know unless I left Luthien to find him.

The risk was great, and the last thing I wanted to do was to leave my herd in a vulnerable state. Our terrain was flanked by my allies, Persephone and Ruger. But without Jabari, and now without Rhoyern, there was no one left to keep a watchful eye over my family when I left. Despite this, I trudged into the chilling sea and headed for the Crossing. I must know where Jabari went.

I scoured the Meadow and then the Falls, looking for my son. I even managed to slip within the borders of the Lagoon undetected, albeit briefly, to find his scent had long gone stale. Otherwise, there were no signs of my two-toned son anywhere. I felt a sudden tightness clench in my chest and I grit my teeth before heading back toward the shoreline.

Along the way, the passing breeze brings with it the scent of someone unfamiliar. My nostrils flared as I took it in, and my honey brown eyes surveyed the immediate open pasture where the sand dunes grew in the distance. A loudly colored mare stood alone, grazing, in the distance. I didn't really have time to mingle, nor was my mind really in the right place to offer some casual conversation. But a brief flutter or worry jut through my heart when I looked at the lone mare. This was hardly a safe time for any stranger to pass through these public lands. Not with the bachelor herd so close, and so many enemies clamoring to add to their numbers. So begrudgingly, I offered a shrill whinny to the mare before I trotted over.

I snorted once as I approached, staring down my nose at her. I could see that her coat was still damp from a recent swim. I bobbed my head in gentle greeting before my lips parted to speak. "Hello." I said gruffly. "Are you traveling alone? It's not as safe here as it once was. You should be cautious."
