Though her first attempt into the water had not ended well, Kimber was not one to give up. The young filly had waited until everyone was asleep to sneak back to the shore just as the sun was rising. The yellow reflection across the sea was beautiful and the waves gentle rather than angry. It seemed so inviting and safe; the young filly walked out into the water without any more hesitation.


At first, the swim was easy. Kimber smiled in triumph at what she was doing; the defiance she was showing at such a young age. But the farther she went out, the larger the waves became until she could no longer see over them. I’m just fine, she thought. But no sooner had that thought crossed her mind, did a wave wash over her head. Legs flailing in panic as she was sucked under water, Kimber struggled to get herself back up onto the surface. No sooner as she done so, taking in a deep gasping breath, that she was sucked under again.


Despite her panic-stricken mind, Kimber never stopped struggling. But without any clue of which direction to go, she didn’t know which way to be fighting for. Thankfully, her blurry salt filled eyes were able to spot some land up ahead. With the last bit of strength and energy the young filly had, she struck out towards the unknown in hope that she could find safety.


Only when her small hooves struck land did Kimber feel relief wash over her. Pulling herself up onto the sandy beach, her legs shook like the day she had been born. Exhaustion crashed down on her much like the waves had done, and the painted girl collapsed onto the warm ground. The sun was well above her now and its warm caress upon her wet skin felt good, along with the warm embrace of the sand below. Unable to help it, Kimber quickly passed out from exhaustion.
