PRIME MINISTER'S DECREE

"None." - Leader

The Offspring

Diccon (Cicada x Khar'pern)

Rules

• The Vulcan Peak is where homeless mares come to live as a sisterhood. Stallions may not live here except as captives or companions for the Leaders.

• Warriors keep mainly to fighting, Thinkers keep mainly to raiding, and Politicians may do both, neither, or act as diplomats. Members may issue their own battles and raids, but should generally consult the General, Codebreaker or Prime Minister for permission.

• All major decisions are determined by vote, but the Prime Minister maintains order within the Peak and has the final say.

• Elections for leadership positions will be held every TLI summer, provided the qualifying criteria are met.

• You can find detailed information about how the Peak works on the Rules page.

THE BANE OF HONOR, THE DEATH OF DUTY (feuerherza)

KUNŽAK

Kune doesn’t want to think about how long he’s been gone, but the mountain seems to command it of him. The Peak looms over everything like a huge sentinel, stark against the grey sky: a presence that commands respect. Almost as if it is a living thing, Kune can barely look at it as he treks the hills that lead into the Vulcan lands. For him, mountains have always been spiritual places, but this Peak in particular knows so many of his secrets. He feels like a sinner returning to a place of worship, and every step feels heavier and heavier.

A humid breeze kicks up the closer he gets, promising rain: perhaps even a storm. It’s a fitting accompaniment to his mood, and to the atmosphere of the Peak. Strange smells greet him on the wind: smells of horses he doesn’t know. He has been gone too long.

Is Bozena even still here? Kune can’t imagine her ever leaving the Vulcans, but neither can he forget how they last spoke to one another. Perhaps she’s taken this opportunity to be rid of him for good. He wouldn’t blame her.

Kune murmurs a prayer to the spirits as he finally passes into the shadow of the Peak. Yet he does not turn to climb higher. Instead, he traverses the foothills downward, toward the forested valley that skirts the mountain. He will be safe and sheltered from prying eyes there. Briefly, he wonders if Bozena had told the other Peak women of their argument, but the thought is so painful that he only entertains it for a moment before shoving it away.

Instead, he thinks of the surprising kindness of the one-eared mare he had encountered in the falls. The memory gives him a little strength as he winds through the trees, his tall black form ducking awkwardly past low-hanging branches. He rounds a bend, where a tree has half-fallen over a boulder.

Then he sees her.

His heart stops. He stands there for a long moment, cold all over, with the strange sensation of his stomach dropping into his hooves. He has played this exact moment in his head over and over, but now that it is before him, his mind has fled his body.

“Bozena,” he finally whispers, his voice little more than a croak. Then the light shifts, and the illusion is gone. The mare is a hair too short, her nose stick-straight, her legs too hairy.

It’s not her.
