The other stallion looked young but he was developing into a well muscled specimen. Cain wondered what kind of pecking order they had in the Lagoon and what his role was in it. Would he try to lure the mare back to be a trinket of the bachelor herd or would he be one of the rare ones who didn't believe in owning them like property? Cain was curious to see. He didn't react much to the mare's wariness, choosing instead to keep his own body language quiet and Cain respected that. The stallion asked if it was safer for her or others at night and Cain flicked an ear toward her, curious of her answer. When the other stallion noticed him, Cain paused and waited to see how he would be received. Would the Lagoon stallion consider him a threat and try to drive him away from the mare? So far, so good.

The pale stallion dipped his head in greeting and Cain returned the gesture politely. Then the stallion asked if the mare was new or just a wanderer. The tobiano stallion watched the mare's reactions as she snorted at the stallion's first question and there was a new softness in her features as she watched him. Whatever he was doing, it was working to soothe her, or so it would seem. Of course, Cain undid that with his approach. His own ears flicked back in disappointment when she sidestepped and flattened her ears. The warning was clear so he stopped where he was, giving her plenty of room so she didn't feel crowded. She seemed uneasy and he started to wonder if he shouldn't have approached at all. The last thing he wanted to do was scare the pretty mare.

He knew he could be intimidating to look at if someone didn't know him. He was thick and muscled with a multitude of scars painting his patchy skin, both from equine and abusive human alike. Most wouldn't know what to do with the brand on his flank since there's no way a horse could do that. But he wore them all with pride now, knowing his history is part of what made him as tough as he was. When the mare finally did turn to him, her voice was a lot more suspicous, speaking of forcing a child on someone and how she would take a real predator any day over that. His own ears flicked back, wondering if something bad had happened to make her so untrusting. His gaze softened as did his voice. "If that has happened to you in the past, I'm sorry to hear it. You are in no danger of that from me and though I've only just met him, I don't sense that sort of ill will from him either."

He nudged his head toward the pale stallion, offering a small smile of good will toward him. Maybe he couldn't speak for the younger stallion but he didn't act like he would impose anything on her and if he or anyone tried in Cain's presence, he would be sure to send them packing. The grey mare continued to eye him with distrust so Cain kept his head low and cocked a back leg, giving off as relaxed a vibe as he could. She continued, saying a predator would at least be honest about their intentions. His lips twitched in the corners. "Can't argue with that." He murmured in agreement. She gave him another look before turning back to the pale stallion with a more likable attitude. Cain tried not to let it feed into his insecurity. He was going to be judged at first glance but he didn't have to play into that judgement and he refused to.

Rejection would be part of the process and no matter how kind he was, he wasn't going to convince every mare to join him. That's okay. Numbers didn't matter. He could make the offer and let it go at that. But first, he needed to figure her out and see if she could even give him an ounce of something other than the distrust and distasteful looks he was getting so far. He had done naught to deserve it other than approach but maybe a stallion in her past who looked like him did something harmful to her. He had to be patient and give her time to see he wasn't like that. She gave her name as Sonorae and added a scolding that neither had asked. His ears flicked back in shame as he dipped his head. "My apologies, Sonorae, and it's an honor to make your acquaintance. I'm Cain." A single ear flicked toward the other stallion then, awaiting his response.
