Hawk vs Owl

This afternoon we happened to see an interesting encounter between a Broad-winged Hawk and a Barred Owl. The hawk seemed to be chasing the owl through the woods. When the owl abruptly turned back, both birds ended up doing some aerial tumbling maneuvers. The owl landed in an evergreen tree, but after a brief rest, the hawk went right at it again. The owl flew off with the hawk giving chase. Eventually the hawk circled back past us and we could hear the owl calling from a short distance away. We didn't see any food items that might have caused this quarrel, so perhaps the owl had simply wandered too close to the hawk's chosen nest site.

Some recently arrived Warblers were singing, including Black-throated Green, Nashville, Black-and-white, Pine, and Yellow-rumped. A few Red Trilliums were opening up along the trail...no white ones yet. (Bracebridge)
