Duck Population Changes

Yesterday at Kerr Park lagoons and Henry Marsh pond, Rick Snider and I tallied 10 Mallards, 5 Bufflehead, 15 Lesser Scaup, 2 Hooded Merganser, 2 female-type Common Merganser (Best sighting was Stephanie Lehman).To-day I noted a pair of Bufflehead in our bay (Pine Lake, near Gravenhurst). A couple of observations; 1) We saw no Wood Ducks. Where are they? The sewage lagoons used to be a Wood Duck factory. My high count was there--45 on Sep. 07, 3003. I’m not aware of any decline in population. 2) Bufflehead. The 15-year old breeding bird Atlas shows only 3 squares for southern Ontario. They should have migrated north by now. My suspicion is that they are now nesting farther south and we will find them here in the next Atlas. 3) Common Merganser. We always had a female with young every year on our lake except for the past few. I fear their numbers may have shrunk just like the Common Loon.
