She was the last horse he expected to see but she was the first in the forefront of his mind that he ached to see in those moments of grief. He hadn't had a chnace to get as close to the newer mares on the island as he had the first four that he brought home. He hadn't had as much time with Primrose before she was taken as he would have liked, but at least they'd had their moment to get past the fear and anger. Geneva was always trusting and kind so he'd bonded with her and Harlequin was the spitfire who alwasy reminded him that a strong stallion was still needed, even if he didn't have to be the bully he thought he did in the beginning. Yet Vihaan was the one who stood out because she alone had seen his dark side with Everglow in the meadow and still chose to show feelings for him in the aftermath.

They'd had moments to just talk and share their stories and they'd had moments to let down their guards and show their vulnerabilities. He helped her through her birthing and in turn, she helped him see how to change. Her absence had been felt every single day and kept him from going out to invite more mares because he didn't want to leave the shores. He didn't want to stop looking toward Luthien. Finally it was her continued absence that sent him to the Common to meet Melisma, Mazarine, Nasa, and Cerosi. He was lonely, oh so lonely. Having Geneva and Zubeia was comforting, but he didn't have the same relationship with them as he did his first few mares. Geneva was trusting but she never shared her story with him. She just entrusted her future to him. In a way, it made her the safety net for him, but it didn't make his chest constrict as it did the moment he inhaled a sweet scent he would recognize anywhere.

He gasped, his very body turning to stone when he heard his name in that soft voice he'd ached over for so long. His back was to her and for a moment, he refused to turn, afraid that it would wash away the illusion that she was here. When the apology fell from her lips though, he knew he would never wish that on a mirage so he finally turned and took her in. His brown eyes washed over her beautiful dunalino form and noted that she looked healthy and well-cared for. Of course, he could expect no different. She was with family and they would have looked out for her. Plus she was a strong mare and she could take care of herself. He'd never doubted that. Seeing her in the flesh was both painful and reviving all at the same time. He felt his heart racing in his chest. He trembled, his nostrils flaring, feeding that urgency to drink in her perfume like it would save his life.

She spoke again, this time apologizing for everything and he finally found the strength to move. He shook his great head fervently. "You have nothing to apologize for. You are not the villian of this story." His head dropped in defeat as he looked at the sand. "That has and will always be me." He murmured the words to himself more than anything, feeling his body flinch in acceptance. When she spoke next, her words surprised him and he lifted his head, studying her pretty features for a moment. His expression started to soften, but when she said that she kept her word and came back, he flinched again and stumbled back a step with a sharp inhale of breath. Of course. She came back to keep her word. She always did. He felt the pain of loss all over again knowing what he must do. Finally, he steeled himself and lifted his gaze back to hers, his jaw clenched with a determination he didn't feel in the slightest, especially right now when he'd never felt more broken.

"Yes, you did. You kept your word, Vihaan." His lips trembled for a moment before he blew out a breath and continued. "And I need to set you free." He looked down for a moment to let the words sink in, both for her and for himself just as much because it suddenly felt hard to stand. But he wouldn't break, not right now, not when she would try to comfort him. She would feel it was the right thing to do. She wouldn't want to leave him like that. That's just the way she was with her heart of gold. Another tear rolled down his cheek but he brushed his face against his shoulder to wipe it away before looking back at her, his way of covering it up so he could say what he had to say. You are welcome to come and go as you please. You always will be as long as I'm here. Akello is your son and you may visit or even invite him to come with you wherever you go. You have no obligations here." He waited then, in case she needed him to explain further though he was sure somehow she would understand.

Did he need her? Yes, with every burning fiber in his being, but he wouldn't do that to her. He couldn't. He wanted to depend on her so badly it hurt not to touch her right now, not to bury his muzzle in her mane and taste her skin beneath his lips. He felt a distance between them now that wasn't there before, even after everything with Everglow. Something had changed. Maybe the past was too deep and dark between them. Maybe there would never be hope for him with a daughter of Shamwari. He'd burned too many bridges. He didn't want her to feel like she needed to be here for him. She always put others first. It was time she put herself first. If he could help her do that, then maybe, just maybe, it would set some things right for him and maybe his luck could change for the future. Maybe his punishment didn't have to be life-long.
