He found himself more and more seeking time outside of the desert to collect himself and let out his grief before he would come back and try to be the lead stallion the herd deserved. he knew he needed to keep going but those graves were still so fresh and the pain was still so raw. He watched as Carbon grew weaker by the day and couldn't see relief in sight and it killed him to think of digging yet another grave. So he pushed past it and went back to the mainland, leaving Akello in charge of his half brother once more so he could see what relief he could find. This time, Cain swam to the Common, not sure if he would find another mare to invite home or if he would find nothing at all. Most of the time, the mares who seemed to find themselves here found company in no time and another stallion's wasn't always welcome.

He decided to take his chances though, shaking out his coat when he got ashore and sighing as he looked around. It didn't take him long for his dark brown eyes to settle on the pale mare. There was something strong and hardy about her and he found himself drinking in that strength, wishing it could fuel him past this grief rut he was stuck in. She seemed so contant in the moment, so peaceful, that he hated to think of ruining it by approaching. What's the worst that could happen? She might say no thanks when he made his offer and he would walk away. He was used to that by now, right? He'd had some decent luck as of recently though, with Melisma coming back to see him in the desert and offering to stay and then Nasa and Cerosi staying as guests until they decided for sure if they wanted to call the desert home.

He had to call that progress, even if it felt like he was losing the foundations that made his herd so unique. Losing his lead mare and his newborn daughter was hard. Losing Zubeia, a sweet mare he hadn't had a good enough chance to get to know, was also hard. Watching his newborn son wither away without milk as life at its cruelest. He had to get a break some time right? That's what he kept telling himself. As the mare grazed, Cain decided to make his approach, walking slowly to meet her and stopping a few feet away to give her plenty of room so he didn't crowd her. He pricked his ears and offered a smile, though it didn't reach his eyes. There was still too much sadness there yet. Swishing his tail, he cleared his throat and tried for his best. "Hello, I'm Cain of the Desert. I'd like to inform you that you're on the part of the mainland where stallions can force claim you so if that's not what you're looking for, I would gladly escort you to the meadow or the falls where that's frowned upon." Being open and honest was always the best policy, he had found out.

Lowering his head to remain neutral, he continued. "Of course, if you are looking for a home and don't mind the heat, I would gladly offer you a place in the Desert." There, now the ball was in her court.
