bite me Berit/Vulcan cont.

The sooty mare seemed pleased with the turn the conversation had taken. She was offered protection and a home for both her and her son. He would not turn Vulcan away and since the boy didn't have a father, Cain felt he could easily step in, but only if Berit approved. He wouldn't overstep his bounds, especially when she was offering so much for him and Carbon. He didn't know why she didn't find herself attractive. She was bold and a quick thinker. She was a problem solver and a good mother to her son. She was tall and sturdy, built with finesse as much as durability. Maybe she was underappreciated as Melisma had been, made to feel like a shadow amongst the light. Well, Cain would have none of that. In Salem, she would feel the appreciation she was due. She was a well defined mare and he would give her the attention she was deserving of.

He could see the relief in her eyes when he told her they would both have his protection. When he told her she could leave with Carbon, he could see a new emotion in her eyes and only when she spoke did he understand. He felt his own relief to know she thought it nonsense that she would take Carbon and go. Of course, that's not what he wanted. She told him the pro's of having a father role in a colt's life and he dipped his head, as much in agreement as acknowledgement. She even offered for him to tell Carbon about his birth mother. He hadn't even expected that much, his eyes softening with gratitude. "Thank you. I didn't want you to feel obligated to stay in the Desert if you didn't feel comfortable there. I don't want captives, but I would welcome two new herd members." He was determined on that front. He would never be seen as a tyrant again if he had any say in it.

She confirmed she wouldn't take his son away and she would settle into his herd. She even added that Vulcan would be as much his as Carbon was hers and he felt happiness brim to life within, his gaze warming as he looked at Vulcan once more. Another son. He had lost Legolas, his yearling son, when Geneva died. He didn't think he would ever see him again. But now he had Vulcan. He nodded. "Then I can only thank you again, for the chance to be a father again, both to my dying son and your very much alive one." His eyes glowed with a little happiness at just the thought. It was enough to distract him from his grief, if only for a moment. She called Vulcan then and they started toward water. He was very patient with them, noting that Vulcan was already a strong swimmer and Berit seemed to be holding her own just fine. Pride and hope gleamed within him and he churned his own legs strong against the tide, eager to get back home to his son. He wanted to see Carbon alive again, wanted to see him strong and healthy.

Once they made it ashore, he shook out his coat and waited patiently for the mare and foal. If they needed to look around and acquaint themselves with the desert, he would give them that chance before he called out for Akello, knowing his yearling son was eagerly waiting his return. The golden stripped tobiano was quick to respond before he came thundering up, taking in his father first expectantly, before his brown gaze looked over Berit and Vulcan with clear puzzlement. "Can Carbon make it here?" Cain asked his son, the urgency clear in his voice. Akello scowled thoughtfully for a moment before he nodded slowly. "I think so. I might have to help him." He glanced again at the mare, curiosity and eagerness in his gaze as he took in Vulcan. A new playmate? He could only hope. He had been the only colt since Legolas took off and it was taking its toll.

"I'm Akello, son of Cain and Vihaan." He offered as introduction with a dip of his head politely. Cain smiled briefly at his son's manners before he nudged his head. "Good. Bring him, please. Time is precious." Akello then gave a nod and took off back in the direction he'd come. Time seemed to move slowly as Can took to pacing on the shore. He glanced toward Berit and Vulcan. "I apologize for the sudden urgency. You'll understand when you see him, I promise." His eyes grew shadowed and sad at the very thought. Would she think him a bad father when she did finally lay her eyes on Carbon? Would she regret what she got herself into? He sighed, pacing once more until he made out the figure of Akello and a smaller, much more wobbly one. Nickering, he turned to Berit and Vulcan. "We can meet them. Please." He was worried that at any moment, she might change her mind and decide not to mother him. He knew he had no right to doubt her word but they were still like strangers, though he hoped to change that soon enough.

He led the way to them across the sand, glancing back and the nerves were clear in his gaze. Once they reached them, he nickered affectionately, running his soft muzzle over Carbon's withered form so gently one might think the colt was made of glass. And in that moment, it was like that. The black colt had shrunken upon himself since his birth. His once clear brown eyes were dull and lifeless, barely able to make out his father's figure and the two with him. He couldn't talk, didn't even have the strength to whicker back. He merely staggered forward, wobbling on bony black legs that looked like they could break at any moment. His breaths looked short and shallow, his sides already heaving in exertion from the short walk to get here. His skin stuck to his bones, making him a little skeleton, but he was pure black with no markings. The little colt stumbled against his father's strong shoulder, not sure what to do from here. He glanced around in question, barely noticing the other colt in the fuzziness of his numb mind. All he knew was his brother had brought him here. Now what?
