Scary squirrel

It was brought to my attention that there was a baby robin being eaten by a squirrel. I then realized that there was another baby on the ground helpless. With the help of neighbours and my family I was able to put the bird back up into the nest at the top of the tree. We then saw another bird on the ground that we tried to herd it under the tree. It was not cooperating. After 20 mins I got it to stay and it’s parents saw it. I am hoping the parents will be able to fend for this little bird. Can someone please answer a couple of questions I have about this situation.
1. Why was the squirrel eating the bird?
2. Do squirrels do this often
3. Will the bird be able to survive and fend for it?
4. Is there anything I should’ve done it that situation that I didn’t do?
Thanks,
Will
