Evelyn’s fingers are busy scratching underneath Sport’s chin, her ears so full of the dog’s happy panting that she doesn’t really hear Morgon. Though having remembered her manners enough to look at him, she does notice that he’s starting turning red. Not the outrageous shade that stains her skin but she recognises a blush when she sees one. Fear flutters in her heart, had she done something to cause this? He’s probably trying to work out a polite method to get away from her and her glaring redness. Of course, she’s accosted his dog and that’s preventing his escape. Well Sport was in the middle of a belly rub right now so she supposed he’d just have to be stuck a little longer.

Evelyn did wish she’d asked something a little more interesting though, if only to make this less painful for him. From experience she knew being trapped in a conversation you wanted no part of was unpleasant. Hesitantly she offered a smile, at least he didn’t seem to mind too much, though she suspected he was merely resigned to hearing such questions. His explanation carries on a little too long but she doesn’t mind, not yet realising that she enjoys listening to him speak. What he actually says is too distracting, her mind leaping at possibilities. “Could she find a person if you asked her too?” the rest of her face turns red as she realises, she’s asked the question aloud. Daring to hope for such things was foolish. “I just… that’s silly, I guess. She’s just a pup…” her voice trails off and she lowers her face. It’s easier to concentrate on Sport for a second than risk feeling judged or pity or whatever else.

Relief floods her as he answers her question about the party in a not too convincing fashion. Her smile is less hesitant this time, “no, not really.” She admits easily. Growing up with a mother who had the power to tell when you were lying had taught Evelyn to either get creative with the truth or just be honest. This time she’d gone for the latter tact. Hoping that maybe she’d been wrong earlier. Maybe he wasn’t uncomfortable because of her but because of the party. She couldn’t be the only person here, who didn’t really want to be, could she? “Honestly, this has been the high of my evening,” she grins, “There’s so many people and I worry I’ll say or do the wrong thing and then there’s the fact I look all wrong”. Her grin wavers and she can feel her face as it flushes again… she’d said too much.

It makes her quick to jump on his comment on her dress if only for a reprieve. “Thank you, I’ve never really worn this kind of dress before. I thought it wouldn’t suit me,” again she’s admitted a little more than she meant to. But it was obvious why she’d worry, wasn’t it? With the crimson, and the odd eyes, certain colours could clash horribly. She only cared because it caused people to stare all the more. There hadn’t been that usual uncomfortable feeling however, when he’d mentioned her dress, she’d felt a kind of warmth. Perhaps that was just what it was like when someone was kind about your appearance.

“Are you from earth?” her eyes had widened a little before her expression changed to horror struck, “I’m sorry! That was rude wasn’t it?” he may not be a refugee, he could have come to Shaman from anywhere, but it had felt rude to just spring that question. Also, what if he was a refugee? Evelyn understood that, that meant being forced from your home. That was probably some horrid painful memory to dredge up and not suitable at all for what was meant to be a party. Besides all that, what was very certain was that she didn’t want to hurt him and not just because she liked his dog. He’d been nice to her and that counted for a lot. “Uh, I’m Evelyn and apparently I’m not very good at this party thing”. Or holding a conversation with a human rather an animal, it seemed.
