The summer was definitely harder on Salem but luckily Cain had adapted to the heat a long time ago. His coat wasn't nearly as thick as it used to be. He loved watching the life in the Desert as the seasons came and went. Carbon was acting like a colt again, running and playing. His weight was restored and he was growing like a weed. He'd be as big as Cain himself in no time. Berit and her son Vulcan seemed to be settling into the Desert well enough. The other mares had been less active around but then, so had Cain so he didn't blame them. He needed a little time for himself after all the grief and loss. He watched over his herd but kept to himself for a little while, watching them from a distance and hoping they would fulfill all their dreams.

He felt like a failure again after losing Mazarine to another stallion on the islands, Solomon. He didn't know anything about the stallion and worried about how he would treat her. Mazarine was a free spirit and he hadn't seen too much of her since bringing her to the Desert. Maybe she'd think of it as an adventure but the real question was, would she want him to come after her and try to win her back or would she be content to stay there with Solomon? He didn't know her well enough to know that. He sighed and shook out his mane. Those were thoughts for another day though. There was nothing he could do about it for now, not until a season had come and gone. Then he could find out her wishes. Then he could fight for her if that's what she wanted.

When he heard his name, his great head turned, ears pricked toward the sooty brown mare as she made her way toward him. His smile was kind as she approached, his tail giving a gentle wave as he lowered his head and welcomed her with attentive eyes. She talked about Carbon and his smile only grew, his eyes lighting up at the thought of his son growing up so big and strong thanks to her. He nodded. "Yes, I check on him often. He has prospered under your guidance. I can't thank you enough for what you've done for him." When she mentioned Akello, he chuckled. "I'm sure Akello likes having the company. He's been so bored without other colts here to play with. Vulcan is a fine boy. He'll make a great stallion some day." He listened as she spoke of the Desert and how she'd gotten used to the heat.

She spoke of the beauty of it and he smiled again, his gaze softening. "I'm glad you have come to appreciate it as much as I do." He tilted his head to listen as she asked how he's been and asked if he'd like company. His smile only widened. "I would love the company. Summer is definitely hot but I've adapted. I seek out the underground caves when I need a break from the sun. It's cooler there and has the spring fed pool that always refreshes me."
